In the last 2 days I have gained infinitely more respect for professors. I always thought it was annoying when professors took so long to grade and return papers to students, but now, I completely understand. For my job as a writing mentor for a Perspectives on World History class, I have to read and edit the research papers of half the class, and meet with students in peer editing groups. That means that on Wednesday, I picked up my stack of 28 15+ page research papers to read and edit in the next week and a half. I started reading through a few of them yesterday, and it’s taking me an hour or more to read each one. That means that it will take me at least 28 hours, but probably closer to to 35 or more hours just to read them all, along with at least 7 hours meeting with students, meaning about 42 or more hours of work in the next week and a half.
To top it all off, it’s Profile Day on campus tomorrow, and I’ll be working there through the admissions office all day, starting at 8am – so early! But, I’m really looking forward to meeting all of the admitted students tomorrow, it’s always a fun and interesting day. The bright side of all of the working is that I’ll be making a LOT of money in the next two weeks – maybe I won’t have to work quite as hard this summer then!
Ohh, the life of a busy college student!
